Recently I had the chance to ask Chris Coyier some quick questions, get his take on a few things within the web design industry, and see what he has been up to lately. Chris, as you may already know, is an extremely talented man who wears a number of different hats and has his hands in many different projects. Perhaps most notably, Chris is the curator behind one of the most well known web design communities CSS-Tricks. It was a pleasure to get to speak with Chris and I thank him for opportunity.

The Quick Six

Shay: You are a very talented man. You are able to design and develop websites while also having a strong understanding of how to do so. A lot of your articles lean more on development side, whether it be CSS, JavaScript, or so forth. Do you prefer development over design at all? If so, is there any special reason as to why?

Chris: I actually don’t consider myself much of a developer. I guess it depends on how you view and define that term. CSS is a purely front end technology. Ninety percent of what I do with JavaScript is front-end related as well. I think of those technologies as design tools as they deal with how websites look and how users interact with them. As a designer, I think it’s my responsibility to know those technologies as well as I can. “Developers” I consider server-side people dealing literally with servers and making websites store and serve up information. I am very limited in my developer skills.

I do tend to be a web-tech-minded designer though. I like working in Photoshop, but just as much I like getting into the HTML/CSS/JavaScript and making things happen with the “final product.”

Shay: Your a big fan of WordPress, and have even written a book on it. Have you ever thought about releasing any WordPress themes? Perhaps selling them?

Chris: Between me and Jeff Starr, my co-author on Digging Into WordPress, we’ve done a number of themes at the Theme Clubhouse. Most of them are free, a few come with the book. None of them are super duper complex or amazingly designed. They all have some sort of niche purpose. I could see possibly doing more themes in the future, but honestly, I generally prefer working on projects that have some specific purpose beyond “this is a cool looking theme.” If I ever did spend a bunch of time on a new theme intended for public use, it’s hard to say if it would be a freebie or for sale. There is a lot of benefit to either way!

Shay: You recently left your day job to venture out on your own. Shortly after you were hired by Wufoo, a company you have grown quite fond of over the years. What has the process been like, heading out on your own and then being offered a job you could not refuse? What is your position over at Wufoo, is anything in particular that you will be doing?

Chris: Wufoo has been great. It’s a real honor to get to work for a company like this. When I did decide to leave my last job, it was in knowing that I needed a change and that I had the luxury of just doing nothing for a while if I wanted to. The only thing that was going to break that plan was a job offer that was really perfect for me. I turned down some pretty dream-level jobs just because they weren’t a good match for what I wanted my life to be like. Wufoo is a perfect match for me in that the job matches my life and that the product is one that I love.

My job title at Wufoo is Lead Hucklebucker. We basically have joke titles because what is in title anyway? We all work to improve the Wufoo application itself, improve awareness of the Wufoo, and to improve the experience and community of Wufoo. Specifically, lately I’ve been working on some industry-specific landing pages, rethinking our forums, our API contest (August 2010), and researching HTML5 forms.

Shay: You have built quite a few web apps over time, one being Are My Sites Up? Do these ideas stem from some of your basic needs or are they something you generally feel would be useful? If needed, how do you go about finding the right help to build out the app?

Chris: It’s a combination of building something that will be useful and that has a decent chance of “making it” because there is enough of a market for it that you can charge for it and make money. I would never want to be working on something that I didn’t personally find useful, but there are things that you personally would find useful but have no chance in the market. In the case of Are My Sites Up?, I was working at a design agency at the time and we would promise our clients that we would monitor their websites. I thought the world could really use a super simple service for that. I have a friend who is really into building apps and was down with the idea. We both thought there was room in the market for this (we actually had no idea how many competitors there were until we were out the door with it). I’m no longer involved with AMSU (just got too busy, needed to cut some things), but there was absolutely room in the market for it and it did pretty well.

I’ve fortunately never been in the position where I had a great idea but nowhere to turn to get it built. My ideas usually stem from things I already know how to do myself or that I currently have people around me who I know can do it. A friend of mine once had an idea to build a site where it would analyze a picture of your face and tell you what celebrities you look like. I basically shrugged it off because even though I thought it was kind of a fun idea, I know that I don’t have those kind of skills or know anybody who does.

Shay: One of the best resources for us web designs and developers are books thanks to some tremendous authors, yourself included. Do you have any favorite web design and development books you would recommend? How about any books unrelated to web design and development?

Chris: If you are into learning straight up CSS, CSS Mastery and Handcrafted CSS are the ones you want. If you are starting with jQuery get Learning jQuery, let that sink in about 6 months, then do a comprehensive review with jQuery Enlightenment. If you are just interested in design theory, I think you should go to college and get a degree in Art! You have to learn design by designing a lot of stuff, you can’t learn that in a book.

Shay: You have your time wrapped in quite a few different websites and projects. Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing? Any particular activities that help keep you refreshed and relaxed?

Chris: I love playing music. I can play a variety of acoustic instruments and I’m finally at the point where doing that is relaxing instead of frustrating (as it is when you are just starting to learn and can’t do much). Otherwise I like a lot of normal people things like live music, good TV, good movies, sporting events, good food, etc.

Are you barreling down on your latest design without a clue on what to do? Are you looking to roll out 5 more blog post this week without any topics in mind? Are you generally struggling to come up with any ideas? Your first thought may be to force through the creative process and work it out for better or worse. You keep pushing until you hit a breakthrough. You think if you put enough time and effort into your work something is bound to turn up. Fact of the matter is, what turns up will not be worth all of the agony.

Stay Creative at Your Own Pace

Simply put, if you are not in the mood to do something do not force yourself to do it. For the time being work on something else, stay productive, and avoid getting burnt out on a piece of work that was going no where to begin with. Putting all of your time and effort in a failing attempt to produce something creative will only frustrate you further.

Allow Creativity to Come to You

Creativity comes naturally not forcefully. If your in the shower an idea strikes run with it. Finish up your shower, sit down at the computer, and start rolling out ideas. If your out on the town and creativity strikes again make a note and revisit it later. Creativity can hit at any moment. Learn how to make the most of these moments as well as how to stay productive when creativity is in a lull. If it means working at the wee hours of the night when creativity peaks so be it, just so long as you are making the most of your time and happy doing so.

Stop Bad Habits and Start Build Constructive Habits

Forcing yourself to be creative will only produce sub par results, of which could be completely avoided had you taken some time to unwind. So before you pour that next cup of coffee and get in over your head stop. Think to yourself, is forcing myself to be creative right this second really worth it?

It is not uncommon for companies to sink large amounts of money into obtaining traffic to their websites in an attempt to increase conversions. Some of their money might go towards search engine optimization and some might go towards pay per click or search engine marketing. Little do they know their problem might not be about getting more traffic. The real problem could be that they have a poor call to action.

A plain “Click Here” link buried underneath a wall of text is not going to yield very good results. Driving traffic to your website is important, however what good is the traffic if the primary call to action is nearly invisible? Having a well-designed call to action could be all the difference needed to rocket conversions sky high. The design of a call to action can be broken down into 4 simple elements, size, shape, color, and position.

Design Elements

Size

Make your call to action large enough that it stands out on top of everything else on the page. It is your primary focus, right? Generally speaking, the larger an element is on a page the more noticeable it will be, thus the more importance it should hold. A good call to action is large enough so that it is easily recognized without being tacky in the process.

Before going off the deep end realize that it is possible to create a call to action that is too large. If you create too large of a call to action users may not understand that it is clickable and will miss the call to action altogether. Create a call to action that is large in relation to other elements on the page, but not over done.

Alternatively, if you have more than one call to action, size them in relation to their importance. The primary call to action should be larger than the secondary call to action.

Sortfolio – The “get listed” call to action stands tall above the rest of the navigation as the primary call to action.

MailChimp – The home page over at MailChimp features two large call to action buttons that ensure they are not missed.

Shape

The best calls to action are most commonly shaped like buttons as they attract attention and are instantly identified as clickable. Use rounded or circular corners on the ends of your call to action to give it the shape of an ordinary button. Square corners do work as well, however some users may misinterpret your call to action for an ad or banner and steer clear from it. Feel free to use square corners, just do so with a bit of caution in mind.

On top of shaping your call to action to that similar of a button it is also beneficial to use a unique font from the rest of the page for your call to action. The difference in the shape of the font will help attract attention to the call to action and draw users in. As always, choose a font that is distinctive yet complimentary to the other fonts on the page as well.

Apple – Apple uses multiple rounded corners to enforce that the element is indeed clickable. They also make use of a “+” circle on the top left corner to help draw users attention.

Authentic Jobs – Authentic Jobs uses a dominant button with an accent below it to guide users eye path.

Color

To say that any of the 4 elements being outlined here has more importance than the other is too close to call, however the color of your call to action is right at the top. One of the quickest ways to grab a user’s attention is by using a bright, contrasting color right within your call to action. Choosing a color that stands out from the rest of the colors used within the page will enforce its significance.

Pick a color that is specifically unique to your call to action and is not used anywhere else on the page. For example, if all of your text is black and all of your links and buttons are blue you should use a different color than black or blue for your call to action. Instead, use a brighter contrasting color such as orange. By using orange the call to action will not fade in with the rest of the blue and black and will stand atop of all the other elements on the page.

It is also recommended that you need to practice using colors appropriately. By all means pick colors that are bright and contrasting, however make sure you pick colors that fit the overall color scheme of the page. Throwing in random colors in order to get a call to action to stand out will look unprofessional and perhaps worse, untrustworthy. Additionally, be careful when using more than one call to action on a page. Too many colors can quickly turn your page into a rainbow, draining the impact of the primary call to action, and pushing users to an unresponsive state.

h2desk – h2desk uses a beautiful bright red call to action on top of a dark background.

Less Time Spent – The bright green button on Less Time Spent is a high contrast of the other colors used on the home page.

Position

Positioning your call to action instinctively within the eye path of users is incredibly important. No matter how large, oddly shaped, or brightly colored your call to action is users will never see it unless it is placed within an intuitive position. The exact position for your call to action will depend on the page layout itself, however the best practice is to keep the call to action above the fold and in a prominent area with plenty of breathing room.

You are able to prioritize the elements on a page simply by the order in which they are placed. Keeping the call to action toward of the top of a page, not requiring users to scroll down to find it, places more value on the call to action and allows it to receive more impressions. Leaving the call to action in an instinctive position allows users to also come back to it after browsing other parts of the website.

Leaving a fair amount of white space around the call to action prevents other elements of the page from interfering with the importance needing to be placed on it. Positioning the call to action in an intuitive position without any clutter in the way will reward the highest amount of conversions.

Textpattern – Textpattern places their primary call to action right underneath the logo ensuring it is going to be seen.

Notable – Notable positions their call to action above the fold with plenty of whitespace surrounding it.

Putting it all Together

At the end of the day creating a good call to action is all about getting users to convert. No matter how you go about getting conversions you cannot ignore the design of your call to action. The 4 simple elements outlined here may not seem like much, but can work wonders on your conversion rate. Take a look at your website and reevaluate your call to action. Could it use a little work? Guido Daniele is an extremely talented artist and his collection of "Handimals" is proof.

After attending art school he began working as a hyper-realistic illustrator in 1972 with many large promotional and advertising corporations throughout the world. After experimenting and trying a few different painting methods he found his stroke with body painting in 1990. What started as body painting for advertising pictures, commercial, fashion events, and other exhibitions has turned into more than Guido could have possible imagined.

The "Handimals" collection originally started when Daniele was hired by an advertising agency to do some body paintings of animals. Instantly he took passion in the idea. "I researched each animal in depth to see how I could transfer it to a hand, and then set about bringing it to life." The first "Handimal" was the cheetah, and to this day is still his favorite. "It turned out perfectly the first time and gave me the courage to complete the rest of the set."

Most commonly, Daniele uses his son (Michael James, 15) and daughter (Ginevra, 22) as his primary canvases. "If you're spending hours on end holding someone's hand, I'd rather it be the hand of someone I love. There's nothing worse than working with a nervous, unfamiliar model whose hands are shaking." On average the typical "Handimal" takes around three to four hours to paint in its entirety. However the first time Daniele painted the eagle with outstretched wings clocked in at ten hours upon completion.

Daniele admits that the hardest part is not the painting itself, but rather having to watch his paintings be washed down the drain and disappear on a daily basis. "I'm getting used to it. At least I get to start each day with a fresh canvas."
